The basic in shamanism is not just to ”do healing”. There are so many kinds of healers and just listening to a person can be an act of healing, so... People can work with singing, dancing, herbs, acupuncture, crystals, and therapy without being called shamans.
Shaman is the Tungusian word för ”the knower”, the wise person, who is using the drum to get into ecstasy or trance to transcend the border between the physical world and the ”quantum world” , the fifth dimension, the upper world, or lower world or whatever we prefer to call it.
The word ”shaman” has now become a word that indicates any kind of medicine man or active transcendentalist in any kind of “natural tribe”, but among those people there are not only healers. There are also all kinds of sorcerers.
Under the wings of the New Age movement, we have a new kind of career, which is a person who wants to make a profession from being a healer or a wise and divine sort of “angelic person”, which is maybe not too difficult as he/she does not necessarily have to make any healing on anyone. It is enough to give workshops about it and sell ”programmed crystals” on a webshop or just ”send healing at eight o´clock” via Internet, so people cannot really see if the healing works or not.
Actually... whatever you say to people it has an effect.
In the old days the shaman was known by all the people in the tribe so they could know if he was clever or not.
If you want to sell your “product of wisdom” it is an effective trick to make a photo of yourself standing in nature, holding a shaman drum and a drum stick, to show that you really are that kind of wise person ”who knows”, preferably with a feather in the hair and why not also a smudge bowl by your side? Together with some words about your totem animal and the tree spirits. (Not strange that the Red Indians can be angry with the White Man).
Advertising always works with symbols in this way, and usually also with very old symbols of wisdom and magic, that are placed into a new context (of money-making). The symbols are carriers of old messages, that are being picked up by our subconscious mind so we get influenced by them without thinking about it. Almost all big companies use this method.
Just hold a drum and some people will say: ”He is a shaman, I can see that because they are the ones who have drums.”
The farther away we are from something the less we can see what it is and in our society, we cannot take a close look at such a person because it costs a lot of money to do it.
So if you hold a drum and tell people that you have ”studied shamanism” and ”talk with the spirits in the drum sessions” you present a powerful symbol and nobody knows how to check your statement.
The same goes for the ”psychic medium”, who stands on the stage telling the audience that ”grandmother is coming here and she says that someone has forgotten to post a letter”.
Nobody can check the validity of everything this person sees and says, but it doesn't seem to matter too much as the audience usually forms a ”group spirit” that all the participants want to be part of to experience the cozy feeling of ”we are all one and we are the "spiritual seekers who know that there are ghosts around”.
If you can create a group spirit you can hold the audience in your grip. Every good artist does and it is, of course, an ”act of power”, which can be used for almost anything, good or bad, right or wrong. High energy does not necessarily mean ”good” - it just means ”high energy”.
A group spirit is formed by high, focused energy and not by morals.
So watch out for being too much dragged into high energies that are created by other people. You can get dependent on it like on a drug. But that does not necessarily mean that it is bad – maybe it is your karma to remain in this group for the rest of your life and find a new lifestyle. Or it is a course that you will attend to for some years. Maybe it will make you stop smoking or drinking? Or just get a new and interesting experience?
If the course is a good one it will teach you methods to find your own Higher Self, your inner true being.
If it is something, that we could call ”black magic”, it will hold you in e firm grip where you will have to get all information from the leader, who has in this way created a ”bigger body” for himself. Just like a big company and it´s workers. You will get more mind-controlled than wise, but at the same time, it is attractive – who doesn't want a new, wise, and protective father to hang on to?
In various religious traditions, they have known that this situation creates a big temptation for the center person and he can be tempted to misuse it. So they, the spiritual teachers, the monks, had to live without money and without a lot of personal belongings and they also had to undergo a kind of moral education.
But today it is not possible to live in that way as everybody has to earn money. We can almost say that it is forbidden not to earn money, and that goes for the spiritual teachers as well.
Guru means “elder” and also the Red Indians respected The Elders, and to have old people as teachers might be a very good idea as they are no longer filled up with the urge to make money. They are also not afraid of losing the job, so they can finally speak up and say what they want.
There are now some white elders, who travel around the world to give lectures about that kind of truths that younger people do not dare to talk about. One example is Barrie Trower. He does not talk about shamanism or religion, but he talks about the reality that we live in right now, the vibrational reality, which is what a real shaman would also do and always did.
What kind of spirit is leading our society? On the road to what?
So, when it is about younger people, a spiritual teacher, a healer, a shaman is also a money-maker and when you look at his advertising you cannot know if this is ”a genuine, good teacher/healer who has to make money also” or if it is ”a money-maker who is just using shamanic symbols”. Both exist.
It is not that every good healer is holding up a drum against a waterfall or a sunset.
It is not that every honest person with a shaman-drum in his hand is a real healer or “psychic”, he might just be giving his fantasies an over-dimensioned “divine importance”.
A person does not necessarily have to be a fake just because he is holding a drum against the sunset.
We don´t know.
In India, we have the name Viveka (as for example in Vivekananda) which refers to the ability to be able to distinguish (between right and wrong, light and dark, true or false, high and low, etc.)
which indicates that it is not so easy to do so.
A shaman has to be a person who can recognize and distinguish between different spirits (powers, energies) because how else would he be capable of dealing with them? It is not just to beat the drum and ask a spirit about everything. If you don´t know the difference between various spirits (and fantasies and memories) you don´t know whom you ask and the answer can be just a good fantasy, a normal thought in the form of a picture, a fear, a wish or just a crazy illusion. Even if you see it in the form of a fairy-tale figure.
But, you can always tell people that you know the difference! Who can check that? If maybe you cannot even check it yourself?
It is perfect if it is a part of your own inner journey towards finding yourself – because then any kind of inner vision can tell you something about yourself, even if it is just fragments of a forgotten, traumatic memory – but it is not something that you should sell to other people.
This inner way is your own, personal, unique way, which follows universal laws but has it´s own content.
Compare with a film studio. The cameras have to function in a certain way, but the film can be anything from wise teaching to a horror movie or a comedy.
Even if a person has a good camera in the head it does not mean that the movie is good.
Even if I have a sharp vision it does not mean that I look in the right direction.
Think of the artist (painter) who trows his traumatic feelings on to the canvas to get rid of these upcoming emotions. Yes, he gets rid of them but they go to the people who buy or look at the paintings, so it could be called black magic in a double sense.
The artist should take such a painting out in nature and make a ceremonial fire out of it. Not sell it.
